Use Light Therapy To Treat SAD
If Christmas, birthdays and anniversary celebration brings sadness and desperation to you instead of happiness, take heart. If you are usually exhausted without indulging yourself too much on physical activity, beware. On these two situations, it is important for you to realize that you may be suffering greatly from seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Unfortunately, SAD is considered to be one of the many psychological syndromes without any medical resolution. SAD is also known as the ‘Winter Blues’ syndrome, a state of mind that affects individuals during the winter seasons. While it is true that winter seasons are brief part of the yearly seasons’ cycle, those who are affected with SAD need more attention because of the seriousness of the possible effect of this mental condition. Neglect of this syndrome jeopardizes one’s life.
It is true that people affected with SAD syndrome are often misunderstood for their odd behaviors during winter periods. Medical findings however prove that during these short winter days, an individual’s body produces increased number of hormones during the time most of people stay at home because of the cold and decreased sunlight. The absence of sunlight results in sleepiness, which is why people normally sleep at nighttime.
Medical research shows that while no permanent treatment or medication associated with SAD, light therapy is the best solution known so far. Light therapy is highly promoted for SAD, as it is simple and easy to conduct. The basic tool being used is the sunbox light therapy, a box that includes light therapy lamps and it is portable that it can be used at home and in the office.
